If you run a direct sales business, you know how well the holiday can be for your income. As the time for gift giving approaches, you need to make sure your business is in people’s minds as they search for gift ideas for family and friends. It doesn’t matter what your direct sales business product line is, the holidays can be huge for your sales. Whether it is gift cards, actual products, or parties, the end of the year can be the way you finish the year with a bang.

1. A VIP Customer Card: create a card with anywhere from 6 to 10 circles, stars, or logos. Give them to customers and tell them after 10 purchases, they get one product free. Make sure you specify the value of the free item. If you offer a service, tell the customer that after the 6th, 8th, or 10th service, they will receive a specified discount on the next order.

2. Goodie Bags: Nothing makes good customers more happy, when dealing with direct sales, than free items. Package up a business card, holiday specials flyer, and a free product ($1-$3 value). Give these goodie bags to your best customers. Drop them off on their front doorsteps, mail them, or hand deliver them. Sure, this will cost you, but usually you can expect to convert 1 out of 4 of these into sales. So keep that in mind when putting this package together.

3. Create your own holiday specials: Send out a flyer to all of your past customers offering a discount or free items in exchange for their purchases. Let’s say that you get a 30% commission from sales, offer customers a 10 or even 20% discount on their holiday orders. Yes, this will cut into your commission, but you will also get a huge surge in sales. Use this technique to kick start a stagnant holiday season in terms of sales.

When looking for direct selling holiday ideas, just remember you need to keep your direct business fresh in your customers eyes. Give them a reason to want to spend their money on gifts from your business.

When displaying your product line at a tradeshow or an event, how do you capture leads of the potential customers that did not make an order or purchase from you? Do you just have a sign up sheet? Do you ask people for their emails for a newsletter you promote? Do you hold a raffle style drawing where the people must put down their info and put it into your fishbowl?

Over the years I have tried many ways to capture leads for future sales and interest. I have tried my fair share of drawings and come to a conclusion of mixed emotions. Chris Carroll at directsalestalkradio.com believes that using drawings at a craft show is a profit buster. I would like to agree with this, but as I said, I still have mixed feelings on this. Once in a while, the leads you receive for a drawing like this can really turn out to be great for sales and downline building.

On the other hand, most of the time these drawings will not benefit your sales or downline. Perhaps the way to compensate for this is to auction off very inexpensive products from your product line. You probably won’t capture as many leads, but your profits won’t suffer as much as if you give away expensive items.

What do you think? Comment and discuss!

A direct sales business is driven by good marketing and good reputation. To run your direct sales business successfully you should have plenty of marketing media to utilize. Business cards should always be on hand.

With direct sales, there are usually two important roles you should be marketing. You should be marketing your products and your team. This means you should also have two types of business cards on hand at all times. One business card that advertises you as a sales person and lets potential customers know how to contact you and another business card that advertises you as a team leader and lets potential team members know how to contact you and learn more about your team.

There should not be a “one size fits all” business card for your direct sales business. Taking your business seriously is one of the most important keys to your success. Get cards made for your business that are good quality because sometimes the only thought that sticks into someone’s mind about you and your business is how professional your business card is. Glossy, good colors, and bold print will stand out in the mind of your customers.

Always give your card out after you speak with someone, anyone. Get those cards out and let people remember you and your business when they see that card. If someone asks for directions or a phone number or a name, write it down on your business card and give it to them. It is a great way to spread your marketing material and business cards are cheap… even high quality and professional ones.

Do you hand your cards out frequently? What works for your business cards? Comment and share!

Marketing is a big part of running a successful direct sales business. Whenever you have some “down time” you should do a bit of marketing to help build customers, sales, and reputation. A great way to market efficiently is to drop your business cards and catalogs off at good “sitting spots”. I call these places sitting spots because they are waiting rooms or areas that people are bored and want something to read or look at.

Placing your catalog at the right spot can provide tons of leads. This is also very efficient financially. One catalog in the right spot can be read by over a hundred people and cost you less than four quarters. On the other hand, a catalog placed in a bad location can be a wasted dollar.

Here are my top ten places to leave catalogs or busines cards for your direct sales business:

Doctor’s Office Waiting Room: dozens of bored patients and parents wait in these rooms for hours a day. Give them something to read that is going to get you some business.

Auto Lube / Oil Change Locations: up to 60 people a day sit in these rooms for 15 to 30 minutes each day.

Laundry Mats: great place for people with downtime.

Back of Bathroom Stall Doors: some places have magazine racks here, put your catalogs here for some boredom reading.

Donut Shops: a few catalogs on some tables in shops like these are bound to be read by morning passerbys.

Deli’s: another place people go for a quick bite and will read catalogs on the table.

Nail Salons and Spas: need I say more?

Day Care Centers: Moms are in and out of these places and also the workers would be interested to see catalogs, try all of the ones in your area.

Check Out Lines: Place a few catalogs in front of some magazines in the racks in checkout lines, people will pick them up and take them if they are clearly marked FREE.

School Administration Offices: Many parents and school staff will come in contact with your catalogs if you leave them in a few of these offices, great for business.

Be creative, think of other places to leave your marketing material and you will be surprised what kind of business this will bring to your direct sales business.

Have any other places you like to use? Comment below and share!
